Katerina
Assimis
Katerina Assimis was born in London, of Greek
parents. She was introduced to the piano at an early age by her mother, herself a pianist.
After finishing the junior department of the
Guildhall School of Music and Drama, she was awarded the first prize for leavers. She then
went on to study music at Kings College, University of London, where she graduated
with honours, including a first degree for her special subject, piano performance. She
followed these studies with three years in Austria where, at the Hoch Schule of Music
& Drama in Graz, she worked with the Brazilian Pianist Sebastian Benda. Since
graduating in 1993, Katerina has again made her home in London where she continues her
career with concerts, recitals, and working with Martino Tirimo. She has given numerous
solo and chamber recitals, as well as orchestral concerts in Greece, Austria, Germany,
Australia and England.
From the early days of the founding of the
Macedonian Society of Great Britain, Katerina has been an active supporter of this, and
associated societies. In London she was a member of the first committee, and 1995, she was
invited to Australia to participate, with a solo recital, in the opening ceremony of the
third International Conference on Byzantine Studies, at the national Gallery of Melbourne.
In November, last year, she was a member of the chamber orchestra which played in
Dusseldorf for the North Rhenish Macedonian Society of Westphalia.
This year, she is again supporting the British
society by donating her services for a recital to be held on March 6 at the Conway Hall in
London. She will be performing work by Macedonian composers - her repertoire includes
Margaritis, Astrinidis and Constandinidis.
As well as public performances, Katerina has
appeared on TV and Radio in Thessaloniki , and in Australia. She has also given a
40-minute recital for the Australian Radio Broadcasting Company.
